Sought by explorers for centuries as a possible trade route, the Northwest Passage was first navigated by Norwegian Roald Amundsen in 1903-1906, a true polar explorer – he was the first man to reach the South Pole as well. In the recent past, Arctic sea ice prevented regular marine passage throughout most of the year. but climate change has reduced this ice, making the waterways more navigable. The film features the in-field research of some of the worlds foremost polar scientists as they show how warner temperatures are affecting the speed of melting glaciers, icebergs, sea ice and floes, and the drastically changing eco-systems in both polar regions. The film and its discoveries were so significant, it was invited by the United Nations Environment Programme to present to delegates attending COP16, the Climate Change Conference in Cancum in December, 2010.
