Explore The Arctic – Past, Present and Future (Korean/English)

The Arctic is a difficult region to define. In history, the boundary of the Arctic moves northward through time. Wild, inaccessible, and seemingly uninhabitable areas of the north were discovered and explored; pioneering hunters and traders gradually moved in to exploit their resources; then permanent settlers began to arrive; and slowly the perception of the region as remote and hostile wilderness diminished. Norway is an Arctic nation. More than 40% of its territory lies north of the Arctic circle. It is therefore natural that Norwegians have participated on many important expeditions to the Arctic. Norwegian explorers learned how to live and travel in the hostile Arctic climate, and to enjoy the stark beauty of the frozen icy deserts and the spectacular northern lights. This exhibition will introduce you to two of those explorers, Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen. The exhibition also attempts to show many of the current issues in the high North, such as science and cooperation in the Arctic, shipping and the northern sea-route, environment and ecology, wildlife and the people of the far north.
